Chattanooga to Pensacola, FL: The Best Drivable Beach Trip

Did you know Pensacola, Florida is only a 6-hour drive from the Scenic City? This guide is full of recommendations for planning the best drivable beach trip from Chattanooga! Pensacola is located in the Northwest corner of the Florida panhandle and is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear water. However, there’s truly so much more to do than relax on the beach.
First off, why is Pensacola “the best drivable beach trip from Chattanooga”?
From hiking in state parks, to taking a dolphin sightseeing tour, to getting to watch the Blue Angels practice their show up close – there’s something for the whole family to enjoy. We recently visited in September for the first time in partnership with Visit Pensacola and we already can’t wait to go back!
📌 Beach Access in Pensacola
Obviously, going to the beach is must when in Pensacola! There’s a few different public beaches you can access either free or for a fee.
FORT PICKENS: Our favorite beach was inside the Fort Pickens area of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Its a $25 entrance fee per vehicle, but definitely worth it to have miles of uncrowded beach to spread out.
The only parking lot with facilities is at Langdon Beach, and features restrooms, a drinking fountain, beach showers, and an accessibility mobility beach mat. There’s also an actual historical fort to explore while on this strip of land (more on that in the next section)
📍Address for Fort Pickens area:
1400 Fort Pickens Rd, Pensacola Beach, FL 32561
– Open everyday // $25 vehicle pass
– No dogs allowed on beach
– 40 minute drive from downtown Pensacola (+ $1.00 for toll road)
PENSACOLA BEACH: There are many other public access points along Fort Pickens Road. You can just drive down, pick a parking spot, and walk towards the ocean. Some access points have boardwalks and others are sand straight to the parking lot. One of the ones we stumbled upon was at this Pensacola Beach Crosswalk.
The most popular beach access spot in Pensacola is definitely at the Pensacola Beach Pier, where you’ll also find the Pensacola Beach Ball Tower! The pier is 1,471 feet long and fishermen will often line the sides & end of the pier. A $2.25 daily pass gets you access to the pier. We saw a shark, jellyfish, and birds from the pier! There are also facilities here such as restaurants, restrooms, showers, and more.

Most people probably don’t think of hiking or state parks when they take a beach vacation, but Pensacola has a few cool outdoor parks worth checking out.
BIG LAGOON STATE PARK: This Florida State Park is a must-visit if in the area! You can hike, rent kayaks, picnic, and check out a cool observation tower. The 3-story observation tower provides a great view of the surrounding dunes and coastal wetland. We loved taking the boardwalk trail to Long Pond.

📌 Pensacola Water Tours:
If you want to get out on the water, book a dolphin-sightseeing cruise! You are pretty much guaranteed to see dolphins on these cruises. These dolphins are well-known by locals and hang out in the freshwater bay instead of the wide open ocean.
We booked with Chase-N-Fins and had a great experience! Below are some photos from our excursion.
I recommend booking the Daily Dolphin Cruise – it wasn’t crowded, and was family-friendly with water bottles provided! You are also free to bring your own food and drinks aboard. The crew was very knowledgable and friendly, and even offered to take some photos of each group on the boat. We saw dolphins constantly pop up on our trip and even caught some jumping out of the water!
The only thing I wish we had done differently is book their Blue Angels Cruise – it would’ve been SO cool to see their air practice from the open water!
📍Address for Chase-N-Fins Dolphin Cruise:
655 Pensacola Beach Blvd City, Pensacola Beach, FL 32561
– Open everyday
– Tours last 1.5-2 hours
– 15 minutes from downtown Pensacola
📌 Where to See the Blue Angels in Pensacola
What are the Blue Angels? They are the United States Navy’s flight demonstration squadron. They perform incredible air shows all over the country, and generally they practice every Tuesday & Wednesday in Pensacola from late March through November.
According to Visit Pensacola, the best place to view the Blue Angels practice is from the National Naval Aviation Museum. However, you can also view them from Fort Pickens, boat cruises, and other places downtown. You can find all the details on the practice information here.
📍Address for National Naval Aviation Museum (WEST GATE):
1878 S Blue Angel Pkwy, Pensacola, FL 32506
– Gates open at 9:30 AM
– The Blue Angels are scheduled to fly at 10:30 AM on practice days
– Must have valid government-issued photo ID (REAL ID) or valid U.S.Passport
– 24 minutes from downtown Pensacola
📌 Where to Watch the Sunrise in Pensacola
No beach trip is complete without at least one sunrise! We discovered that the best place to watch the sunrise in Pensacola is at Wayside Park. There are swings, pavilions, and walking paths set up here and it’s just off the bridge. Only 10 minutes from downtown Pensacola!
📌 Additional Planning Information:
Location – Pensacola, Florida is located 6 hours away from Tennessee and is the best drivable beach trip from Chattanooga. You pretty much traverse the entire state of Alabama and it’s an easy drive!
From Chattanooga, TN = 6 hour drive
From Nashville, TN = 6.5 hour drive
From Knoxville, TN = 7.5 hour drive
From Memphis, TN = 7 hour drive
When to Visit – Most people visit Pensacola in mid-summer for vacation. However, if you want to avoid the crowds and peak humidity, visit in late April to early June or September-October. This is the sweet spot for great weather and outdoor activities.
Where to Stay – We were recommended to stay at the Holiday Inn Express Pensacola Beach. Every single room overlooks the Gulf and has a private Gulf front balcony, so there’s not a bad room in the whole hotel!
Things to Know –
TOLLS: To get to Pensacola Beach from downtown you will pass a toll booth that is $1.00 every time you go through it. It’s called Toll-By-Plate and a photo will be taken of your vehicle’s license plate when you pass through the toll both. An invoice will be mailed to the vehicle’s registered address for the toll(s) incurred over 30 days, plus a $2.50 administrative fee. We went through the toll booth several times on our trip, but it would’ve been cheaper if we had gotten a SunPass Mini before our trip — which is only $4.99.
PARKING: For the cheapest parking, ParkMobile is the way to go and it’s also the official parking app of the city of Pensacola. Keep an eye out for the green signs with black numbers on them in downtown Pensacola. However, if you see Red Premium Parking signs – those are private lots and usually cost more.

📌 That’s a wrap!
In my opinion, Pensacola, FL is the best drivable beach trip from Chattanooga. We found so many amazing food options and we’re still dreaming about a few of them. The access to outdoor activities besides solely “the beach” was also a plus for us 🙂 Thanks so much for checking out my Pensacola Beach itinerary and guide!

Thank you, I live in South Florida, will be doing this trip during spring break, my daughter and I are teachers.
